Dear Minister Clark:
2002 opening of Wells/Barkerville Elementary School
City Council, at its August 12th regular public meeting, reviewed letters sent to your Ministry by the District of Wells and the Wells Parent Advisory Committee on the above topic. They also listened to Mayor Hendrixson of the District of Wells who, on that evening, was in the 22nd day of his hunger strike over this matter.
City Council unanimously resolved that a letter of support be forwarded from this Council toward your intervention in this matter, with a view to mediating the dispute between the parties so that the above School can remain open for the 2002-2003 school year.
The importance of this School for the small community of 250+ residents cannot be over-emphasized. It is a centre for the community and allows the children in Kindergarten to Grade 7 to remain at home near their parents, particularly during the cold winter months when daylight is at a minimum. If the School remains open for the upcoming year, the District of Wells' council and staff will have time to negotiate an agreement to take over the School for future years, but September, 2002 is too close to settle anything now.
For the sake of the Wells/Barkerville community, and those who are currently on hunger strikes, please expedite a solution within the next week! I look forward to your positive and much-appreciated aid.
