Letters sent to The Premier, Minister of Education, MLA's and Quesnel School District Trustees...

19 July 2002
Honourable Christy Clark
Minister of Education
Victoria B.C.
Fax: 250-387-3200

Dear Ms Clark:

I am greatly concerned over the welfare of young children who will suffer greatly from a decision recently made to close the school in the small community of Wells, B.C. The decision was made by School District 28 who pleaded lack of funds to keep the school open.

This school is approx. 80 kilometres from Quesnel - and a very treachourous road in winter. An ordeal, and a dangerous journey for the five year olds who will have to undertake this every day.

I lived in rural communities in both the east and west Kootenays when my children were small, and I cannot conceive of having to allow them to go through this every day. Our rural communities are important to B.C. - they deserve help and support to continue to play a vital part in such things as our tourist economy. They must not die through such actions.

This decision must be reversed.

I urge you, as Minister of Education for our Province, to take appropriate steps so that this can be effectively dealt with.

Yours sincerely,

Audrey Johnson
Vancouver, BC
